Payment failed — fix it safely
Retry only after a clear reason appears in-app (3DS prompt, limits, card lock, billing fix) — not because an email told you to.
What to do now (safe route)
Rule
Do not click links or open attachments from the email/SMS. Verify using the bank app (opened from the icon) or the official website you type manually / open from bookmarks.
Stop. Answer this first
- Do you see the same alert/notice inside your bank app?
- Did you trigger a payment attempt now? (checkout / pay button)
- Is this a subscription renewal / automatic retry? → scroll to Subscription renewals
Route A — it matches a real in-app attempt (message still not trusted)
- Do not click anything in the email/SMS.
- Follow steps only inside the app / official site opened manually.
- If a pending hold exists: wait for it to release or contact the merchant/bank; don’t create more attempts. See Pending charge.
- Retry only after you changed something (see rule below).
Route B — nothing like this appears in-app (or the message pushes links/login)
- Default: treat as phishing until proven otherwise.
- If no matching in-app attempt: ignore + report.
- Report: use “Report phishing” in your email client + your bank’s official phishing/fraud channel (from their website).
- If you see holds/attempts you don’t recognize: lock the card and contact the bank via official channels.
- If you shared anything, secure your email/account first, then contact the bank.
Avoid: replying with documents, sharing OTP/SMS codes, installing remote access tools, or logging in via an email link — even if the email looks real.
Safe retry rule (important)
- Retry only after a clear reason appears in-app and you corrected it.
- Never spam retries. It can create holds/duplicates or trigger fraud locks.
- If you suspect duplicates/holds, check Pending charge and Charged twice.
If this started from an email, use Bank email: scam or real?
Common causes (action-first)
Bank / card-side causes
After you fix the cause, retry once only if no pending hold exists.
- Insufficient funds / holds → check available balance and pending holds.
- Limits (online, daily, international) → enable/raise in-app.
- 3DS / SCA not completed → complete the prompt.
- Card locked / security block → unlock/confirm in-app (or call bank).
Merchant-side causes (very common)
- Merchant risk / fraud filters → try another method or contact merchant support.
- Billing address / ZIP mismatch (AVS) → correct billing profile.
- Account verification required (merchant-side) → check your account settings on the merchant site; don’t do it via email links.
- Currency / international acquiring → try local currency, another card, or ask merchant support.
- Subscription token expired / card updater failed → re-add card / update payment method in account settings.
Messages you might see → what they usually mean
- “Your card was declined” → generic decline; check app alerts/limits/3DS; if repeats → contact bank.
- “Issuer declined / blocked by issuer” → bank decision (risk/limits/policy); verify in-app, then bank support.
- “Try again later” → temporary issue; only if the attempt exists in-app and there’s no hold, retry once later.
- “We couldn’t verify your payment method” → merchant verification/risk; update billing profile or contact merchant.
- “Authentication required” / “3DS failed” → verification not completed; complete prompt, retry once.
- “Limit exceeded” → adjust limits, retry once.
- “Invalid card” / “Expired card” → update details, retry once.
- “Do not honor” → generic issuer decline; treat as bank-side unless merchant confirms otherwise.
Wording varies by bank and processor. Treat these as patterns, not a perfect diagnosis.
Subscription renewals (automatic retries)
Why this causes panic
- The renewal attempt can happen hours earlier, but the email/SMS arrives later.
- Merchants may run automatic retries. Automatic retries are common and not fraud by itself.
- Repeated manual retries can add holds or lock your card.
- First: check the merchant account/billing page (opened manually, not from email links) for the renewal status.
- If a hold exists: wait for it to release or contact the merchant/bank; don’t create more attempts.
- Fix the usual renewal causes: expired card, 3DS prompt, limits, merchant-side verification required, billing mismatch.
- Then: retry once (or update payment method) only after a clear reason appears in-app.
Timeline (holds and escalation)
- Immediately: failure message appears.
- Minutes: bank app may show the reason (3DS prompt, limits, lock).
- Hours–days: you may see a pending authorization (hold) that later releases.
Holds: what to do
- Don’t confuse a hold with a posted charge. Pending only = not finalized.
- If it’s pending only: wait (don’t retry).
- If it posts twice: contact the merchant first, then the bank if unresolved.
Risk (scam likelihood)
You triggered it and the bank app shows a clear reason.
- Fix cause → retry once (only if no pending hold risk).
You triggered it, but the reason is unclear or it keeps failing.
- Not a scam by default — usually issuer/merchant friction. Just don’t follow email links.
- Check both sides: bank app alerts + merchant billing/account verification.
You did not trigger it, or the message pushes links/login/OTP.
- Default: treat as phishing → verify in-app → lock card if holds appear → contact bank via official channel.
Common questions
Is a “payment failed” email always a scam?
No. Real payment failure emails exist — but never trust the link. Verify only inside the app or on the official site you opened manually.
Should I retry the payment?
Retry once only after a clear reason appears in-app and you corrected it. Avoid repeated retries.
Can retries create duplicate charges?
Yes. Retries can create holds or duplicate authorizations. Check pending charges and charged twice.
What if I see “Do not honor”?
It’s often a generic issuer decline. Check bank alerts/limits/3DS. If it repeats, contact your bank.
Does a failed payment affect my credit score?
No. A failed card payment is not a credit report event. It may affect your available balance if holds appear.
Why does it fail even with enough money?
Common reasons: holds reduced available funds, limits, online/international toggles, 3DS not completed, merchant risk filters, or issuer risk decision.
What if my subscription renewal fails?
Update card details (expiry), complete 3DS, check limits, and avoid multiple retries. If you see holds, let them settle first.
Should I contact the merchant or the bank?
If the bank app shows a decline reason, fix it there first. If it posts incorrectly, contact the merchant. If you suspect fraud/scam, contact the bank immediately.
Could this be caused by verification or restrictions?
Yes. If you see verification prompts or account limitations, check bank verification request or account restricted.
What if the failure message came with urgency and a link?
Treat it as high risk. Don’t click. Use bank email: scam or real? and verify via official channels.
