Card declined — fix it safely

Fast route: app reason → fix → retry once. Stop after that.

What to do now (safe route)

Rule: Don’t retry repeatedly. Retry once only after you change something (3DS completed / card unlocked / limits changed / billing fixed).

Route A — the app shows the reason

  • Fix the issue in the app
  • Retry once
  • Stop if it still fails

Route B — the app shows nothing

  • Stop retries
  • Check toggles and limits anyway
  • Switch merchant or payment method
  • Lock card & contact bank if merchants are unknown or attempts repeat

Most common fixes in the app

  • Complete 3DS / verification prompt
  • Confirm billing address / ZIP (AVS)
  • Unlock / unfreeze card
  • Enable online payments
  • Enable international payments
  • Increase limits

If this is the cause → do this

  • Funds / limits → check balance and limits
  • 3DS / authentication → complete verification, retry once
  • Billing address / ZIP (AVS) → fix billing details
  • Online / international disabled → enable in app
  • Merchant or MCC blocked → use another merchant or method
  • Generic bank block → check app alerts, then contact bank

Messages you might see → what to do

  • “Authentication required” → complete 3DS, retry once
  • “AVS / ZIP mismatch” → fix billing details, retry once
  • “Limit exceeded” → raise limit, retry once
  • “Payment failed” / “Something went wrong” → generic decline; check app alerts & try another method
  • “Do not honor” → check app → try another merchant → contact bank if needed

Risk (two things: account lock + fraud)

Low
Lock risk: low
Fraud risk: low
Medium
Lock risk: medium if retries continue
Fraud risk: low
High
Lock risk: high
Fraud risk: assume card testing if unknown merchants or multiple small attempts

Common questions

Why is my card declined even though I have money?

Limits, 3DS authentication, disabled online/international payments, AVS mismatch, or bank risk controls.

Does a declined card mean the payment went through?

No. A decline means the transaction didn’t complete. Temporary pending holds may appear and disappear.

Can retrying make things worse?

Yes. Repeated retries can trigger locks. Retry once only after fixing something.

Why does my card work in stores but not online?

Often online payments are disabled, billing details mismatch, or 3DS wasn’t completed.

What does “Do not honor” mean?

A generic bank decline. Check app settings and try another merchant before calling the bank.

Why do I see declines I didn’t try?

Subscription renewals or merchant retries. Unknown merchants may indicate fraud.

Can a decline affect my credit score?

No. Declines don’t affect your credit score.
